The UK Government wants COP26 to deliver action

COP26 President Alok Sharma (MP for Reading West, and former Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy) has stated ahead of the conference that COP26 must not just be a “photo op or a talking shop”, and that real changes must be actioned because of the event.

Four key areas were highlighted as paramount deliverables:

  1. Significant carbon emissions reduction by 2030, and a net zero World by 2050.
  2. Reductions in coal usage, lowering of methane emissions, more electric vehicles on the roads, and an increase in trees planted worldwide.
  3. For the $100 Billion dollar pledge (developed countries to supply these funds to developing countries to decarbonise annually) to be honoured.
  4. An overall outcome that allows ambitions around carbon reduction to increase over the coming decade.
